Take the Tec 40 course with The Dive Shop

The PADI Tec 40 course is where you transition from recreational scuba diving to technical diving. It’s a great place to start because it’s the first subdivision of the full PADI Tec Diver course and bridges the gap between no stop diving and full technical deep decompression diving. You gain experience and begin building the knowledge and skills you need to continue your tec diver training. You will qualify to make limited decompression dives to 40 metres/130 feet.

Tec 40 & Tec 40 Trimix

The Dive Shop is Calgarys most active technical dive training centre. We go above and beyond what's outlines in the PADI Program to give you the best training possible.

 

The PADI Tec 40 course is where you transition from recreational diving to techncial diving. It is the highest level that can be completed using single cylinder configuration. It is the bridge between no stop diving and technical decompression diving and a pre requisite for Tec 45 diver training.  You will qualify to:

- Plan and make decompression dives with no more than 10 minutes decompression using decompression gas, or not more than 25 minutes or decompression using bottom gas, and not deeper than 40m/130ft. 

- Dive with redundant gas source, either single cylinder plus baiolout bottle Sidemount or back mounted double cylinders. 
-use a single cylinder of decompression gas up to 50% oxygen (EANx 50) for decompression

To enroll in the Tec 40 Course you must meet these qualifications:

  • 18 years old
  • 30 logged dives (minimum 20 in a drysuit recommended)
  • PADI Advacned Open Water Diver (PADI Rescue diver recommended)
  • PADI Enriched Air Diver
  • PADI Deep Diver or proof of 10 dives to 30m/100ft or deeper
  • PADI Drysuit Diver (recommended)
  • Medical form signed by a physician

The Tec 40 course consists of seven online independant knowledge development sessions, two evening classroom sessions, 4 practical application sessions and 4-6 training dives. You'll learn about technical diving risks and responsibilities, technical diving equipment configurations and useage, team diving concepts, thinking like a technical diver, handling underwater problems, extensive and up to date decompression theory and gas planning. We will guide you on planning decompression dives so you don't just blindly follow your dive computer or decompression software. 

Equipment required

At the technical level divers should own all their own equipment. Using the proper equipment for technicl diving is crucial. Please speak with your technical instructor before any purchases tro ensure proper gear selection for your course. 

  • even though you can complete this course using a single back mount configuration it is recommended to use either Sidemount or double back mounted twins cylinders
  • Regulators
  • Primary & back up mask
  • Cold water fins with Spring Straps
  • Drysuit & thermal
  • 2 multi gas computers
  • Primary torch with a "goodman" handle
  • Back up torch
  • Cutting tool
  • Wrist mounted slate
  • Wet Notes (waterproof notebook)
  • Spool with SMB
  • Deco Bottle ( 40 or 80 cuft) with DIN Valve
  • Dedicated regulator for Deco Bottle (DIN 1st stage. 40" LP hose, 6" HP hose & SPG)


Tec 40 Trimix (optional)

Curious about the benefits of using trimix gas, like decreased gas density and reduced narcosis? Tec 40 divers can also learn to use trimix with not less than 21% oxygen and not more than 35% helium. Ask your instructor what additional requirments you may need to complete the Tec 40 Trimix option.
